Shirley C. Kaelin, age 80, longtime resident of West Chicago, passed away Wednesday, August 24, 2011 at home surrounded by her loving family. She was born on May 2, 1931 in West Chicago, IL to William and Dorothy Streit. Shirley was a graduate of West Chicago high school where she met her future husband. Shirley was united in marriage on July 14, 1951 to Charles G. Kaelin. She was co-owner of Dayton Insurance Agency in West Chicago for many years. Shirley retired from the Regional Superintendant of Schools. She enjoyed John Wayne movies and especially enjoyed going to her family cabin in Wisconsin.
Shirley is survived by two daughters, Kathryn Vana of West Chicago and Kim (John) Shimkus of Cambridge, MN; one son, Kenneth Kaelin of West Chicago; four grandchildren, Jason and William Vana, John Shimkus Jr. and Kelly (James) Belmont, three great-grandchildren, Allie, Caleb and Rebecca Shimkus; five sisters, Marianne (Charles) Wenk, Patricia (late Henry) Dettmann, Louise (Charles) Gustafson, Joan (Dan) Miller and Joy (Robert) Filip; and many nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband Charlie in 1994; parents; one brother, Kenneth Streit; great-grandson, David Belmont; one niece and two nephews.
Visitation Sunday, August 28, 2011 from 2 to 6 pm at Norris-Walen-Segert Funeral Home, 132 Fremont St. West Chicago. Prayers, Monday, August 29, 2011 at 9:15 am from the funeral home to St. John the Baptist Church in Winfield. Mass 10 am. Interment Resurrection Cemetery in Geneva.
