October 9, 1947 – May 20, 2025
Richard John Palkovics, passed away peacefully on May 20, 2025, at the age of 77, surrounded by his family. Born on October 9, 1947, to Emil and Anne Palkovics, Rick grew up in Chicago with his siblings Fred, Jack, Carol, and Cathy—laughing, learning, and building a foundation of love and loyalty that stayed with him his entire life.
Rick believed in hard work, honesty, and doing things the right way. Through decades of dedication, he built a life for his family that reflected the American dream—one rooted in opportunity, sacrifice, and love. He took pride in providing for those he loved and never took for granted the life he created through perseverance and grit.
Family was always at the center of Rick’s world. He was a proud and devoted father to his sons Rick (Lisa) and Jamie (Rachel). He married Lynn Berry on May 30, 1976, and together they had daughter Katie (Brian) and shared 30 wonderful years. Rick and Lynn created a life full of love, laughter, and adventure—cherishing family camping trips, cruises, and time spent with loved ones. Their deep love for each other and their family was evident in all they did. He was a cherished brother-in-law to Craig (Donna), Janet (Craig), Barb (Mike), and uncle to many nieces and nephews. Rick and Lynn were together until her passing in 2007.
For many years, Rick and Lynn were avid bowlers in a league where they originally met Loni & Denny Homa. After 27 years of marriage, Denny passed in 2008. There must have been a nudge from beyond as Rick & Loni reunited in 2009. They were incredibly blessed to have found a special love again. Rick and Loni married and Rick became a loving stepfather to Emily (AJ), Adam (Megan), and Chris (Amy).
As special as his children were to him, Rick took the greatest pride in being a grandfather to his 19 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren. Whether he was cheering from the sidelines, sharing stories, or just being present, Grandpa Rick and Pa made everyone feel special. Known for his wit and charm, Rick joked that his children and grandchildren had inherited the “Palkovics curse”—being just too good looking. That kind of humor, lighthearted and full of love, was one of the many ways he made those around him feel proud of who they were.
Rick had a true zest for life. He loved staying active - Pops could be found at the Four Lakes Blind Draw volleyball tournament every weekend in the summer. He could single handedly carry his teammate in a game of bags at any family party, he was that good. After retiring, he and Loni spent winters in Arizona, soaking up the sun, floating in the pool, relaxing in the hot tub and exploring new places whether by car, foot or bike. Some of his happiest moments were the simple ones: sitting outside with a book or a perfectly made dirty martini in hand, oldies music playing in the background, and a warm breeze brushing by. Those quiet evenings, filled with laughter, stories, and his favorite songs, were his idea of paradise.
Rick will be remembered for his easy smile, his big heart, and his deep love for those around him. His legacy lives on in every story told, every game played, every laugh shared, and every oldies song that drifts through the air on a warm night.
