John “Jack” Joseph Niland, born May 30, 1932, in Chicago, Illinois, passed away peacefully on December 10, 2025, at home, surrounded by family. He was 93.

John grew up in Chicago as the proud son of Irish immigrants, a heritage that shaped his legendary warmth, quick humor, and sense of family. Jack's hospitality was legendary. He was the self-proclaimed "Doctor" who had a unique prescription for making every visitor feel welcome: a celebratory shot of whiskey.

As a young man, Jack served his country in the United States Air Force, 126th Bombardment Wing, and was called to duty during the Korean Conflict, spending time stationed in Lyon, France.

After his service, he returned home and began a lifelong career that perfectly suited his engaging personality: the railroad. For four decades, John worked as a trainman and conductor with the Chicago & North Western (C&NW) and then Metra. His unwavering dependability and friendly demeanor endeared him to colleagues and daily passengers alike, so much so that he was once asked to officiate the marriage of two passengers right there on the train. A dedicated advocate for workers' rights, he was an active member of the United Transportation Union (UTU), often bringing his children along to meetings and events.

Jack’s deep passion for music and dancing was a pure source of joy. He grew up playing the accordion and would later delight family gatherings by playing the organ, filling the air with melodies that brought joy to our hearts. But his talents didn't stop there. Dancing was another of John's passions. At family gatherings, he was the center of the celebration, moving with such infectious grace and energy that he inspired everyone around him to join in. His love for music and dancing is a joyful part of the legacy he leaves behind.

Family was at the center of Jack’s life. He was the beloved husband of 53 years to Rosella (née Wands) Niland, who preceded him in death in 2013.

John is survived by his five loving children: John Niland, Jr. (LeAnne); Deborah Beck (David); Pamela Circelli (Anthony); Patricia Stephens (James); and Thomas Niland (Ilyse); his sister Anna Mae Beeter (Robert); twelve grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents Michael and Margaret Niland, his brother Francis Niland, and his sisters Mary Niland and Eileen Suchowski.

The family would like to offer special thanks to his daughter, Patricia Stephens, and her family, who lovingly cared for Jack in their home, ensuring his comfort and dignity throughout his final years.
