Eugene M. (Gene) Wind

Born December 7, 1918 in Washington Township, Tazewell County, IL near Peoria, IL.
Passed on July 24th in Scottsdale, AZ at the age of 95 years old.

Gene was the tenth child in the William & Tillie Wind family. All brothers and sisters have preceded Gene in death.

Gene attended a one room school at District 16 in Deer Creek Township and graduated in 1932, then attended Washington Community High School, graduating in 1936. He then attended the University of Ill. in Champaign-Urbana from 1937-1941, graduating with a BS degree in Agriculture with a major in Horticulture in 1941.

He served in the U.S. Armed Forces from 1942-1945 and remained in the Air Force Reserves until 1978, obtaining the rank of Lt. Col.

After leaving the service he worked as a mushroom grower for 12 years, and then worked for Western Electric & AT&T. He also spent about a year in Iran working for AT&T International and returned to West Chicago in 1979 where he later retired in 1983.

He and his wife Neil, moved to Scottsdale AZ in 1998 and spent their remaining years there.

He loved to golf, bowl and play softball; he loved to watch the Cubs, Bears and University of Illinois football and basketball games, and later in life he enjoyed reading.

He was active in many West Chicago civic organizations such as American Legion, Boy Scouts, Railroad Days, Lions, Church, Fox Community Center, Knights of Columbus, West Chicago area United Way, Vice President and Board member of the DuKane conference. He served 18 ½ years as an Alderman in the City of West Chicago.
Through the years, Gene was recognized by many of these organizations and has been awarded the Silver Beaver from scouting, the Melvin Jones from the Lions and the Spirit Award from Kiwanis as well as Citizen of the Year from the Amity Lodge, Railroad Days, Chambers of Commerce & Lions.

Gene is survived by 4 children, Sandy (David) Hicks, Pat (Lee) Kapustka, Russ (Laura) Wind, and Dale (Dusty) Wind. Gene is also survived by 14 grandchildren and 3 step-grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren and 1 step great-grandchild; 12 great-great-grandchildren and 2 step great-great-grandchildren.

Gene was preceded in death by his wife Neil (2006) and son and daughter-in-law, Wayne and his wife (Rosalee) in 2013. Also preceded in death by 3 grandchildren, Stephen, Jennifer and Donna.
Visitation will be on Wednesday, July 30, 2014 from 3 to 8 pm at Norris-Walen-Segert Funeral Home , 132 Fremont St., (one block north of Washington St. and Main) West Chicago.
Funeral mass will be held on Thursday, July 31, 2014 at 10 am at St. John the Baptist Church , 233 Church, Winfield, IL. Interment will follow at Glen Oak Cemetery in West Chicago.
