Clarita David Herrero
1948 – 2026
Clarita David Herrero, lovingly known as “Nanay,” passed away peacefully on August 1, 2026, at 2:06 p.m., surrounded by her family at her bedside. She was 78 years old.
Clarita was born in 1948 in Sampaloc, Manila, and grew up in Tondo, Manila, the daughter of the late Jose Maglalang David and the late Josefa Layug Canlas David. In 1967, she graduated from the Philippine College of Commerce, going on to build a life defined by hard work, warmth, and an open door for everyone she met. On June 17, 1972, she married the love of her life, Antonio Herrero, and together they began their journey in the United States — first settling in California, then Michigan, before finally making their home in Chicago, Illinois.
The family eventually settled in West Chicago, Illinois, where Clarita made her home. She worked in downtown Chicago as an underwriter assistant for Zurich Insurance, and was beloved by her coworkers for her tireless work ethic and her kind, loving personality. She had a gift for talking with people and putting them at ease — a warmth that followed her from the office to every room she walked into.
More than anything, Clarita treasured her family. She lit up spending time with her children and grandchildren, cheering them on at every performance, graduation, and party, and treasuring the things they made for her. She loved watching basketball and football with her family — always rooting enthusiastically for her favorite player, Tom Brady. She definitely loved a good movie or binge-watching a show. Her latest favorite was on the Filipino channel — along with her husband Antonio, she was a devoted fan of the show Ang Probinsyano, following all eight seasons and cheering on her favorite actor, Coco Martin.
She also loved a trip to the mall and a meal out with the people she loved, and her eyes would light up whenever anyone asked if she wanted her favorite Oberweis strawberry and coffee ice cream.
Clarita was a devoted member of her Santo Niño prayer group, where she spent countless joyful hours praying and playing bingo with the group. And of course, she loved talking on the phone with her Santo Niño family — friendships that brought her endless laughter and comfort.
She was, above all, kind and loving, quick to laugh, generous with her time, and gifted at making everyone around her feel welcome and comfortable.
Clarita is survived by her children and their spouses: Arnel & Lovella, Carlo & Ninah, Erick & Lecille, and Sheila & Glenn; her grandchildren, Carinah, Joshua, Ashlie, Jason, Arielle, Christian, David, Adrian, Jordan, and Liam; and her brothers, Rodolfo and Danilo.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Jose and Josefa; her brother, Jesus; and her beloved husband, Antonio Macapagal Herrero, “Tatay,” who passed away on November 16, 2025, at the age of 84. We find solace knowing she is reunited with her one and only true love, and they are together forever, resting in peace.
Clarita’s laughter, her generosity, and her gift for making people feel at home will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her. She will be forever remembered as a devoted mother, grandmother, sister, and friend.
